"Stop volunteering in orphanages"

  • "You mean well, but maintain harmful practices." With this message, care leavers from Kenya, Rwanda and Nepal share their own experiences and call on Dutch youth to stop volunteering and internships in orphanages.

"To our Dutch friends and global volunteers, we acknowledge your genuine intentions to make a difference. However, volunteering in orphanages sustains practices that ultimately harm children and delay the critical transition to family-based care systems." the caregivers write.

Their appeal is supported by the launch of Thnxnothnx, a campaign by Better Care Network Netherlands. The campaign highlights that volunteering and internships abroad are a good idea (Thnx!), but volunteering and internships in orphanages exacerbate rather than solve the problems of vulnerable children (No Thnx!).

    The FACTS

According to scientific studies, including a meta-analysis of more than 300 studies from 60 countries, growing up in an orphanage has harmful effects on children. Attachment problems, cognitive delays, growth retardation and behavioral problems are common. Volunteers who work briefly in orphanages often unintentionally reinforce these problems. They build temporary bonds with children, which are broken again and again. This
causes feelings of abandonment and contributes to the development of attachment disorders.

    CAMPAIGN

"It's time to stop romanticizing volunteering in orphanages," said Patricia Nieuwenhuizen, coordinator of Better Care Network Netherlands. "The Thnxnothnx campaign offers young people practical tips and alternatives. www.thnxnothnx.nl features projects that really benefit vulnerable children and communities. This allows young people to make a difference, expand their world and prevent their volunteer work from causing harm - unintentionally."
